The San Bruno Community Foundation announced the 2024 Crestmoor Scholars, awarding multiyear scholarships totaling $160,000 to the students in the city. Seniors Justin Chan, Xenia Gomez Iñiguez, Emilio Ramirez, Sareena Robinson, Jessilyn Rodriguez and Kaley Shum from Capuchino High School and Celina Buncayo, Camille Catolos, Eden Huang and Thet Mon Kyaw from Skyline College received the award.
The Crestmoor Scholarship was established in 2016 to honor the community members affected by the gas pipeline explosion in the Crestmoor neighborhood in 2010 and the resiliency of the community throughout the city in the aftermath of the disaster.

Goz Asai of Redwood City placed second place in the 2024 Songs for Social Change Contest at Berklee College of Music for his song “For Better for Worse” which addresses the morality of the development of artificial intelligence. Asai is a songwriting major at Berklee and co-wrote the piece with partner Deven Kamra Lyons.

Skyline College students Celina Lourdes Buncayo, Princess Johanna Eusantos and Thet Mon Kyaw were selected to receive the highly competitive national Jack Kent Cooke Foundation’s Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship. The award can provide each student with as much as $55,000 a year to complete their bachelor’s degree.

The San Mateo Union High School District announced Dr. Michael Jones as the new principal for Aragon High School beginning the 2024-25 school year. Prior to this position, Jones was the principal at Lowell High School in San Francisco. Prior to that role, Jones held several positions in the San Francisco Unified School District including assistant principal at Balboa High School and interim principal at The Academy — San Francisco at McAteer.
“Dr. Jones brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our District and Aragon,” Superintendent Randall Booker said. “He has a strong track record for inspiring others through service leadership in education, and we are fortunate to welcome him to our team.”

Roosevelt Elementary School will host an outdoor concert featuring the fourth and fifth grade band at 8 a.m. Friday, June 10, in front of the school grounds.
