Jack Ruegg went 8 for 13 with 10 RBIs through a three-game baseball series against College of Marin, and the rest of the Trojans lineup kept pace with the red-hot sophomore in Saturday’s series finale, as Skyline College (11-3) took the rubber match with a 16-3 win at Trojan Diamond.
Jack Ruegg
Not to be outdone by Ruegg’s 3-for-5, two-double, five-RBIs line, sophomore Vinny Smith fell a double shy of the cycle, going 4 for 5 with a triple, a home run and three RBIs. Sophomore first baseman Nick Tobin added three hits, with a homer and six RBIs.
Ruegg has now hit safely in five straight games, batting .600 (12 for 20) during that stretch. The Pacifica native out of Sacred Heart Cathedral is now pacing the Trojans with a .449 batting average.
Gilbert Roth got the Mariners (6-7) on the board Saturday with a three-run in the top of the second. Skyline answered by sending 12 batters to the plate to drop an 8-spot in the bottom of the frame. Smith’s two-run home run, his first of the year, cut the score to 3-2. Skyline then loaded them up for Ruegg, who cleared the bases with a three-run double to give the Trojans the lead.
Sophomore starter Steven Dalton allowed three runs on seven hits through five innings of work to earn the win, improving his record to 4-1. The left-hander struck out a season-high eight against three walks. Declan Mendel, Brode Gann, Will O’Brien and Luca Dickinson combined for four scoreless inning of relief to close it out.
Skyline collected 46 hits in the series, falling last Wednesday 11-2 loss at home, before bouncing back Thursday in Marin for a 9-6 victory. The Trojans are now tied for 11th in the state with a .317 team batting average.
