Antoine Evans and Fidel Pugh have been joined at the hip since their playing days at Galileo High School.
It was Pugh, as an assistant coach under Barry McLaughlin at Sacred Heart Cathedral, who recommended Evans join the Fightin’ Irish staff in 2021. Then, after Evans was informed in December he wouldn’t be renewed as SHC’s head coach, it was Pugh who told Evans he should apply for the job at Carlmont.
Evans was hired as Carlmont’s head football coach in March after what he termed as shock after being informed SHC wasn’t bringing him back after four years as the program’s head coach, a tenure that ended with a trip to the Central Coast Section Division II finals.
“I thought we was building something and heading in the right direction ... but I guess they had different plans and they wanted to move in a different direction,” Evans said. “They never really told me why ... but they wanted to move on. And in the land of being a head coach, that’s what happens sometimes.”
Evans replaces longtime Carlmont coach Eric Rado, who was not renewed after six season’s as the Scots’ head coach. Rado coached 10 years at Carlmont, including four years as an assistant on Jake Messina’s staff before being promoted to head coach in 2020.
Rado is now working as an assistant coach at Menlo School on head coach Todd Smith’s staff.
“I spent 10 great years of my life at Carlmont where I grew a lot as the coach,” Rado said. “Spent six years as the head coach and had the opportunity to bring aboard alums ... and really proud of them and really proud of all the kids I was able to coach. It was a really good group of kids and I think about them every day.”
Evans brings three assistant coaches who worked with him at SHC to Carlmont. Offensive coordinator Pugh is the headliner. Levar Watkins, wide receiver/defensive backs coach; and Pete Wilson, junior-varsity head coach, will also be joining the coaching staff for the Scots.
Evans applied for several head coaching jobs in the offseason, including at Lincoln-SF, Liberty-Brentwood and Clayton Valley-Concord.

“I never really looked at Carlmont,” Evans said. “I don’t know, I never looked that way.”
Evans said it was Pugh who recommended he apply for the Carlmont job. Evans commutes from San Pablo, and will continue working as a physical education teacher in San Francisco. He starts a new teaching job at RISE Prep-SF in the fall.
Carlmont will mark Evans’ second varsity head coaching position.
“The community looked great,” Evans said. “The games looked fun so when I looked at it. It was everything you wanted as a head coach.”
Carlmont, last season, played in the Peninsula Athletic League De Anza Division. The Scots posted a 1-4 league record, but their 2-8 overall record isn’t indicative of four losses by a touchdown or less, including Sequoia’s 35-34 comeback victory in the season finale rivalry game.
This season the Scots will move down to the PAL Ocean Division, the third tier in the five-division PAL.
Evans posted a career record of 24-29 record at SHC, including two trips to the CCS playoffs. His last game as an assistant coach under McLaughlin in 2020 was a state championship victory 48-29 over Northview-Covina in the CIF Division 4-A Championship Bowl. In Evans’ first year as head coach in 2022, the Irish qualified for the CCS Division I playoffs, falling to St. Francis 17-14 in the opening round. Last season, SHC reached the CCS Division II finals, falling 24-21 to St. Ignatius-SF.
“The WCAL is a whole different monster when it comes to politics and things like that,” Evans said. “I will just say that I feel like I’m in more control of my program. ... Coming down to the public school, I feel like I can really put my plan in place and do what I need to be successful.”
