The 2005-06 Bay Meadows Holiday Meet opens Monday, Dec. 26 for a 31-day run, wrapping up Feb. 5 — Super Bowl Sunday.
The meet features eight stakes races, including Northern California's premiere Triple Crown prep race, the Grade III $250,000 El Camino Real Derby Jan. 29. The race, which has been contested in March the previous nine years, returns to a January date where it historically been successful.
"It's in a place on the schedule where horses went on to do well in the Triple Crown," Bay Meadows president Jack Liebau said in a press release. "Being run in January, it's one of the first two-turn races for 3-year-olds. ... We've also raised the purse from $200,000 to $250,000. I think it will definitely be one of the highlights of the meet."
The El Camino has featured a number of top horses over the year, including 1999 Kentucky Derby winner and Horse of the Year Charismatic, It's a 1 1/16-mile race for 3 year olds.
The $75,000 Holiday Turf Handicap is scheduled for opening day and has attracted 17 nominees. Other stakes races include: Bay Meadows Cotillion (Jan. 1), Bay Meadows Mile (Jan. 2), Soviet Problem Dash (Jan. 7), San Carlos (Jan. 14), Burlingame (Jan. 21) and Foster City (Feb. 4).

The San Mateo Gymnastics' Level 7 team took the top spot at the Judges Cup season opener at San Jose State University.
Monica Furuta, 11, earned the all-around gold medal with three first place performances and one third. She scored 38 out of a possible 40 in the process.
Amanda Wallbridge finished third in the all around, Caitlin Fovenyessy took second on the bar.

The Redwood City Penguins 10-and-under girls' soccer team capped off an undefeated season by winning the Great 8 City Tournament in Foster City.
The Penguins tied their first game of the season before winning the next 14 in a row, allowing only two goals in the process. After winning the Redwood City championship, they set their sights on the Great 8 -- a tournament of champions from Belmont, Burlingame, Foster City, Half Moon Bay, Hillsborough, San Carlos, San Mateo and Redwood City.
The Penguins blasted Half Moon Bay 6-0 in their first game, downed San Carlos 1-0 and beat Hillsborough in the bracket final to earn a spot in the finals against Foster City.
