The student opinion columns are an informative feature of the Daily Journal and a great service to the community. “New year, new nation?” by Aakanksha Sinha was one of the most perceptive commentaries of any of your columnists this year. She identified the most important issues facing our time and our country.
May I recommend that you offer her the opportunity to be a regular columnist where she could expand on each of her four resolutions? Secondly, I hope that she considers standing for election to a public office as soon as she is old enough. I will vote for her.
Her first New Year’s resolution is to elect a stable leader to represent, galvanize the country, and win in a landslide. Agreed. For such a person to appear and for the vast majority of the American population to agree that this is the right person to lead the country, is very optimistic in the current political climate. We can only hope that this will happen.
It is not only the president we need to be concerned about. If only more voters paid attention to congressional, state and local officials, our democracy might have a chance to function as it was envisioned.
Thanks for your letter today. The most important sentence in your letter is the last one. Local elections are the only real place that citizens have a true voice in their government. Local school boards, zoning regulations, parking restrictions, etc. are controlled locally. I have not missed an election since I could vote 56 years ago and I don’t plan on missing any in the future. While serving in the military I sent my ballot in from the east coast while there and from as far away as Antarctica.
One last thing, if you don’t vote you have no right to complain.
