California has always been a leader on the issue of soda in schools, starting with the example of Los Angeles and San Francisco. Then, fanned from a spark of a comment in an interview before the San Francisco Chronicle editorial board, there now is an Associated Press feature around the world. ("Arnold aims to ban junk food at schools," March 7)
California has already banned soda K-8, but Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has urged that the ban be extended to high school. Many of the largest school districts in the country have followed the lead of LA and San Francisco and gone soda free K-12. The districts include New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Las Vegas, Boston, Seattle, Austin, Buffalo, Scranton, and many more. They agree: Kids' health matters. Practice what you teach. Model good choices.
A school district should not promote a physical stimulant to a captive audience of schoolchildren. Don't accept compromises when a child's health is at issue.
But it took someone to show the nation the way. Keep up the good work California. You make a country proud. There's still much work to be done as over a dozen statewide bills with bite face uncertain prospects.
