I appreciated Craig Wiesner’s excellent opinion piece titled “HIP Housing” (published on Nov. 28). Finding and keeping affordable housing in San Mateo County is difficult, and HIP Housing comes to the rescue with its Home Sharing, Self-Sufficiency, Housing Readiness, and Property Management programs. Having volunteered with HIP for over 12 years, including 10 years on the Board, I have seen up close and personal how HIP has improved the housing and lives of thousands of people in our community.
I support Craig’s appeal to those of us with a spare bedroom or two or an ADU to check out HIP Housing’s Home Sharing program. And if you don’t have space to share, consider other ways to support HIP Housing, as this non-profit agency truly makes a difference.
Thank you, Craig, for your series of columns on homelessness and poverty. And Hip, Hip, Hooray for HIP Housing!
It’s great to hear about some of HIP Housing’s successes. Conversely, it would be nice to read about the failures, and if HIP Housing helped (say legally) when things didn’t work out, or whether folks were left on their own to deal with failures. If HIP Housing is a successful model, why isn’t the model being duplicated to help hundreds, or thousands, more? Are overall costs per participant above average (assuming an average can be determined)? Is HIP Housing receiving city/county money? Let’s get folks who supported a homeless hotel in Millbrae to open their homes. Perhaps then a homeless hotel won’t be forced upon Millbrae residents.
