Editor,

As a community, we would all benefit from legislation that improves housing availability and reduces traffic congestion “San Mateo weighs in on Senate Bill 50” in the April 17 edition. Increasing housing density is going to make the traffic problem even worse as our public transit system cannot handle it. Unless we have public transit system like in Japan or Singapore, it is not going to work.

We’re spending $2 billion to electrify Caltrain to accommodate more people and $500 million widening 101. SamTrans is buying new buses, as have BART and SF MUNI. We just voted to spend $40 million a year on pedestrian and transit improvements.

If these aren’t enough nothing will ever be.

You just described the worst public transit systems in the country. You are right. These will never be enough! Build affordable housing on high tech campuses!

CalTrain carries about 2% of the commuters in the Bay Area. Electrifying it will gain another 40%. Call it 50% and we're at 3%. The money voted for SamTrans was to keep it alive as ridership drops like a rock. It is too slow and people valuer their time. NYC is one big "Transit Oriented Development" with millions of public transit riders yet commute times and traffic delays are the worst in the US.

Why do people like you not accept there are limits to growth? Nothing grows forever. Time for the big employers to expand elsewhere. East Bay, Sacramento, Ohio.

Yes, more and better public transit. But equally, if not more important, build more bridges across the bay, adding vehicle lanes, rails and tunnels. This should have been one of the first steps. Hopefully SB50 will be voted down.

So many people think that all we need is more housing. Never mind that transportation and other infrastructure is not here to support lots more people.
