Two challengers for two seats on the Half Moon Bay City Council bring their unique and very coastside perspectives to the conversation on whether they should replace two incumbents.
Vice Mayor Harvey Rarback of District 2 is being challenged by Patric Bo Jonsson, a former planning commissioner, and Mayor Joaquin Jimenez of District 3 is defending his seat against Paul Nagengast.
Jimenez deserves to keep his seat, hands down. No question. His presence on the City Council has been extremely important to the farmworker and low-income worker community, who require such a voice. He knows the community, he serves it well, and he knows what is required of him for all other aspects of the job. He is a true community servant, and can advocate for everyone in neighborhoods, on the dais and at the regional and state level. His focus is always on the people of Half Moon Bay, and using the office to better their lives in every aspect. That’s key.
Nagengast has a firm grip on the nuts and bolts of the city, and has refreshing points of view on potential new sites for housing at the city’s large shopping centers and ensuring safety for pedestrians and bicyclists — particularly locals who are aiming to beat traffic. However, Jimenez remains the best choice for this seat.
Rarback has been a progressive voice on the council, but that pursuit can lose some in the community. Jonsson is a neighborhood leader who could come up to speed on city issues. However, Rarback is already up to speed and can perform well for the district and the city.
