SACRAMENTO — Former state Sen. Albert Rodda, a Democrat who represented Sacramento for 22 years, has died.
Rodda died Saturday at his home in Sacramento at the age of 97, said his son, retired Sacramento County Superior Court Judge Steven Rodda.
He called his father "a servant of the community.”
The Sacramento native represented his hometown from 1958 to 1980. Among other accomplishments, he wrote the bill that gave collective bargaining rights to California teachers.
He helped create Sacramento Regional Transit and the California Railroad Museum. Before he was elected to the Legislature, Rodda taught history and economics at Sacramento City College.
Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg, also a Sacramento Democrat, praised Rodda on Monday as "one of the great Sacramentans.”
