Gov. Gavin Newsom announced he wants to restrict students’ usage of smartphones during the school day, citing the mental health risks of social media.
Almost all public schools in the U.S. had a cellphone policy last school year that allowed students to bring their phones to school, but two-thirds of those schools banned the use of phones during the school day, according to RAND research.
In a survey of 985 school principals, principals at schools with cellphone restrictions said they had resulted in improved school climate, reduced cyberbullying and less inappropriate phone use.
Sixty percent of the students surveyed for the American Youth Panel were in favor of some sort of ban on cellphone use in the classroom, but only 10% agreed that cellphones should be restricted for the whole school day. The students who supported classroom bans said they reduced distractions in class.
Cellphone bans were less strict in high schools and communities where there was less poverty, according to the reports.
