Three Virginia men pleaded no contest to three felonies each, including elder abuse and residential burglary, for a roofing repair scam, San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said.
The men, 39-year-old David Anderson, 22-year-old Charlie Anderson and 40-year-old Darren Temple, were each sentenced to four years in state prison, although they have already served two of the four years.
The men allegedly claimed to be offering free roofing assessments with their company Teco Roofing and Masonry, Wagstaffe said previously, advising the San Mateo victim that his mother’s roof had $1,250 worth of damage. The men continued to up the pricing of the roof damage, convincing the victim to wire $15,000 to a company called Scorpio Luxury.
The victim became suspicious after the alleged scammers asked for $62,400 to fully fix the roof and then contacted the police, who determined Teco Roofing was a real company with which the men were not affiliated, Wagstaffe said previously. Anderson, Anderson and Temple were subsequently detained at the victim’s house, where they were masquerading as day laborers, Wagstaffe said.
Ultimately, five total victims of the scam were found, and the three men owe $179,211 total in restitution to those victims, Wagstaffe said.
