An alleged roof-repair scam perpetrated by three Virginia men claimed at least three victims, San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said — although the DA’s Office is still investigating.
The men, 39-year-old David Anderson, 22-year-old Charlie Anderson and 40-year-old Darren Temple, were originally charged with five felonies and three misdemeanors each for attempting a $15,000 roof-repair scam on a San Mateo man in early May.
Now, charges of 12 additional felonies and six misdemeanors per person are being added after the discovery of two more alleged victims, Wagstaffe said.
The men allegedly claimed to be offering free roofing assessments with their company Teco Roofing and Masonry, Wagstaffe said, advising the victim that his mother’s roof had $1,250 worth of damage on May 6. The men continued to up the pricing of the roof damage, convincing the victim to wire $15,000 to a company called Scorpio Luxury.
The victim became suspicious after the alleged scammers asked for $62,400 to fully fix the roof and then contacted the police, who determined Teco Roofing was a real company with which the men were not affiliated, Wagstaffe said.
Anderson, Anderson and Temple were subsequently detained at the victim’s house, where they were masquerading as day laborers, Wagstaffe said. They were ultimately arrested and charged with residential burglary, fraudulent use of a false contractor’s license number, obtaining money under false pretenses and identity theft, among other crimes.
A motion to set their bail, currently at $30,000, to no bail will be heard June 3. They could face at least 20 years in state prison, Wagstaffe said.
