Burlingame is considering raising its building permit fees to help pay for a part-time arborist.
Parks employee Steve Porter was overseeing public and private tree maintenance but recently retired. City staff suggested he be named the part-time city arborist and raise $44,806 for his salary.
The money would come from doubling the protected tree removal permit fee to $50, raising the residential and commercial planning application fee from $80 to $125, and increasing the building and plumbing fee from 4 percent to 11 percent. The fees would start 60 days after the council's approval and the job would begin next month. There will be a public hearing Monday night.
The city is also trying to raise $3.71 million for improvements on the Rollins Road area. Burlingame originally decided to split the cost of improvements in the area evenly with developers, but now wants to pay 60 percent to encourage development. City staff will report on the plan when the Burlingame City Council meets 7 p.m. Jan. 3 at 501 Primrose Road.
