It was a hot Saturday afternoon in San Mateo but the homemade habanero-flavored candies at the Prince of Whales chili pepper cook off were even hotter.
John and Debi Curry, the owners of the Prince of Whales Pub, hosted their annual Chili pepper cook. Thirty-two local contestants competed for one of the three prizes, and there wasn't a pair of dry eyes in the house.
The criteria for the cook-off, however, was the influence of the pepper not the heat, said Debi Curry. Some dishes were, in fact, mild in taste.
Among other things, there was homemade salsa, cream cheese-filled peppers, soup, chicken wings, toasted and peppered almonds and of course chili. All the appetizers were free, and they were all being served, dissected and critiqued.
The first place prize went to Laurie Boyd for an artichoke and pepper baked appetizer. The second place prize went to Sue Mahoney for a tortilla wrapped pepper cream cheese appetizer. And third place honors went to Chaz Cotton for a pumpkin and pepper soup.
The Curries gave out trophies and other pepper-influenced products for the winners of the competition.
The battle of the chili is not, however, over for the Curries. The two will be leaving for El Paso on Nov. 2 to represent the state of California in the World Chili Competition.
