A vacant 1.6-acre property in San Bruno has been sold to the Cardinale Automotive Group — which will build a three-story Hyundai and Genesis car dealership at the site — for $5.06 million, City Manager Alex McIntyre said.
The city has been struggling to find use for the property since before 2012, when the remainder of lots at The Crossing site, located at 1010 Admiral Court, were built out for commercial and residential use.
The lot was eventually acquired by San Bruno in 2012 with the goal of turning it into a jobs and revenue-generating development, an objective that was fulfilled by the purchase, McIntyre said. Up to 70 jobs are anticipated to be created through the new dealership and over 100 during construction, a July 15 press release said.
“It will create jobs for the city in the form of sales, as well as maintenance of automobiles. It [will be a] fairly substantial sales tax provider for the city,” McIntyre said. “Our fingers are crossed they are hugely successful, and that success will spill over to the city.”
Development for the new dealership is anticipated to start this summer and be completed by late 2025, according to the press release.
The Cardinale Automobile group has been operating a temporary location at The Shops at Tanforan in San Bruno, and the purchase now makes their presence in the city permanent.
“After 12 years of effort to develop this site, the new auto dealership aligns with the goals and needs for this site,” Mayor Rico E. Medina said in the press release. “Best of all, it keeps the dealership in San Bruno and satisfies the community’s long-standing desire for a land use that contributes tax revenue and jobs that benefit the entire community.”
Filling the currently-unused lot has long been a goal for the city. In 2015, a five-story hotel was approved for the site, but development didn’t move forward, the press release said. The deal with Cardinale Automotive Group has been in the works for longer than McIntyre’s tenure with San Bruno, he said, although he’s happy to bring it to a close.
“This deal certainly predates me by several years. Staff were able to push through to get this deal accomplished in the way the council hoped we would do so,” he said. “When I joined the city a little over a year ago, the deal was handed to me to bring to a close.”
The unique nature of the project — including its 171,610 square-foot, three-story structure — makes it unlike other car dealerships, which are often spread over multiple acres of asphalt.
“It’s going to be a unique, innovative auto dealership,” McIntyre said.
