Hannah Bernthal, Menlo School girls’ lacrosse. The senior had a massive day on each side of the field in a 21-4 win over University-SF. The Dartmouth commit had six goals, four assists, six draw controls and one caused turnover as the Knights improved their record to 3-0. In those three wins, Menlo has outscored opponents 63-13, with Bernthal contributing to over half those scores with 21 goals and 11 assists.
Gio Garduno-Martin, Half Moon Bay boys’ basketball. The senior sharpshooter has helped lead the Cougars to the Nor Cal Division IV title game against Sacred Heart Prep. In a 56-54 win over Sanger West in the quarterfinals, Garduno-Martin poured in 31 points. In a 68-51 semifinal win over Marysville, Garduno-Martin led the way again, finishing with 24 points and nine rebounds.
Alex Osterloh, Sacred Heart Prep boys’ basketball. The senior guard helped lead the top-seeded Gators to the Nor Cal Division IV championship game after helping his team to three wins last week. He opened with a 23-point performance in a 67-63 win over Lowell. He had 11 in a 59-48 win over Soquel in the quarterfinals, and in 60-54 win over Burlingame in the semifinals, Osterloh scored 25 points on 10-of-16 shooting.
Max Morelle, Sacred Heart Prep boys’ track and field. The senior shot putter announced his presence as a contender for a Central Coast Section title after winning the Rustbuster Invitational title at Monta Vista High School in Cupertino. Morelle’s toss of 58 feet, 10.5 inches was the fourth-best throw in the state early in the season and it set a new SHP school record, a Rustbuster meet record and Monta Vista stadium record. He also won the discus title at the same meet. His throw of 149-9 was more than 13 feet better than second place.
Emilio Oseguera and Gio Bernal, South City baseball. The Warriors improved their record to 3-0 with a pair of wins last week, thanks largely to hitting exploits from the two seniors. South city opened the week with a 16-0 home win over Design Tech, with Oseguera starring both sides of the ball. At the plate, we went 3 for 4 with a double, two triples and four RBIs, while on the mound allowing one hit with eight strikeouts over four innings of work to earn the win. Two days later, Bernal powered the Warriors’ 9-1 home win over Washington-SF, going 2 for 3 with a double and South City’s first home run of the season.

Mo Overbey, Woodside softball. The senior center fielder helped the defending CCS Division IV champs to a pair of mercy-rule wins last week as the Wildcats are 4-0 to start the season. In a 10-0 win over Notre Dame-Belmont, Overbey went 1 for 3 with a RBI and tracked down two deep flies to center field. In a 13-0 win over Sacred Heart Cathedral, Overbey went 3 for 4 with two doubles, four RBIs and two runs scored.
Charlotte Teague and Clara Young, Woodside girls’ swimming. The Wildcats’ pair wasted little time in posting CCS qualifying times in the first dual meet of the season, 115-62 win over Aragon. Teague qualified for CCS in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:16.56. In the 100 breast, she posted a time of 1:15.15. Young qualified for CCS in the shortest and longest races. She clocked a time of 24.21 in the 50 free and came back with a time of 5:08.91 in the 500 free.
Lucas Shotts and Jimmy Naylor, Crystal boys’ soccer. The Gryphons’ main offensive weapon, Shotts, and their lockdown defender, Naylor, both played big roles in their team’s march to the Nor Cal Division V title game, a penalty-kick loss to Branson. Shotts had three goals and an assist to lead a rout of Nipomo in the semifinals. Naylor scored the game-tying goal with 13 minutes left in regulation of the championship game.
Celia Hernandez, San Mateo softball. The Bearcats put on quite a show at the plate in last week’s back-to-back wins over Wilcox and Los Altos, totaling 20 runs on 28 hits through both games. Mateo had an array of hitting stars, including Hernandez, who went 6 for 7 with a double and an RBI through the two victories to up her season average to .750 (9 for 12). What sets the junior apart is she also recorded two wins in the circle, combing to allow two runs (none earned) on four hits through 11 innings to improve her record to 2-0 on the season.
Michael Ohman and Cooper Hipps, Serra baseball. The new guard had a big hand in the Padres’ 4-2 win at St. Mary’s-Stockton. With the game deadlocked a 2-2, Ohman entered in relief, and the freshman left-hander dazzled through four hitless innings, while striking out six, to earn his second win of the year. Hipps was the batter that delivered Serra to that win, as the junior logged his first varsity hit in style, a two-run triple in the top of the sixth.
