Capuchino left-hander Lola Sierra’s first postseason start was an absolute gem.
Taking on a Saratoga lineup hitting .291 on the season, Sierra fired a one-hitter as No. 2-seed Capuchino (15-11) rolled to a 7-0 victory in Saturday’s Central Coast Section Division II quarterfinal playoff opener Saturday in San Bruno.
It was the junior’s second shutout of the year. She faced just two over the minimum, allowing one walk while striking out seven. With the win, Sierra improves her record to 12-7 with a 1.73 ERA through 121 2/3 innings in her first season as a regular in the varsity circle.
Senior Liz Do led the Lady Mustangs at the plate, going 2 for 4 with a triple and a season-high four RBIs, boosting her average above the .300 mark to .302. Freshman Lily Thomas added a 3-for-3 day with an RBI, while Sierra and freshman Dana Motroni recorded one hit and one RBI apiece.
No. 7 Saratoga (13-6) recorded one hit by freshman Alaina Retamoso.
Cap now advances to the Division II semifinals. The Mustangs will host No. 6 Mountain View (16-10) Thursday at 7 p.m., after the Spartans knocked off No. 3 Lincoln-San Jose in Saturday’s opening round 6-2.
OPEN DIVISION
St. Francis 11, Carlmont 1
Burlingame native Shannon Keighran took to the circle to lead No. 1-seed St. Francis (26-0) to a five-inning mercy-rule win over No. 8 Carlmont (12-10-1) in Saturday’s postseason opener in San Jose. The senior right-hander allowed just one unearned run on one hit, and has now won her last 33 varsity decisions going back to 2022.
Keighran has served as part of a deep one-two punch for the Lancers. With the win, she matches senior Kate Munnerlyn, each of whom have 13-0 records on the year.
Carlmont junior Katie Fung recorded her team’s only hit on the day. Fung took the loss in the circle through 2 2/3 innings, while junior Sophia Cerelli and Sienna Farrell pitched in relief for the Scots. Hayden Hummel homered for St. Francis, while sophomore Jamie Oakand and senior Rebecca Quinn totaled three RBIs apiece.
The Lancers advance to take on No. 5 Willow Glen in Wednesday’s semifinals.
Willow Glen 3, Hillsdale 1
No. 4 Hillsdale (23-5) was held to just two hits by sophomore pitcher Alanna Clincy, as No. 5 Willow Glen (22-6) knocked off the Lady Knights in Saturday’s CCS playoff opener in San Mateo.
Clincy allowed just one unearned run on two hits and a walk with seven strikeouts. It was Willow Glen’s second win of the year over Hillsdale. The two previously met in the championship game of the Los Gatos-Westmont Tournament.
Sophomore Sophia Shelton and freshman Liana Mack recorded one hit apiece for Hillsdale. Senior Claire Shelton was 0 for 3, being held hitless for just the fourth time this season. She finishes the year with a .482 batting average, third best among Peninsula Athletic League Bay Division hitters, behind Cap junior Avery Motroni (.493) and Aragon freshman Taylor Workman (.484).
DIVISION III
San Mateo 10, Alisal 4
No. 8 San Mateo (10-11) rallied for a major upset in Saturday’s CCS postseason opener at No. 1 Alisal-Salinas (21-4).
Senior two-way player Nia Mapa led the Bearcats, going 3 for 4 with two doubles and five RBIs at the plate, while earning the complete-game victory in the circle. Freshman Demi Alfonso added two hits and two RBIs for San Mateo, Hailey Wallweber had two hits, two RBIs and three runs scored, and freshman Alice Han had two hits with a double. Leana Sanchez led Alisal with two hits.
The Bearcats jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Alisal swung ahead with three runs in the bottom of the inning, but San Mateo fired back with four runs in the second and never looked back. Mapa went the distance, allowing four runs (one earned) on five hits, three walks and a hit batsman, while striking out one.

San Mateo advances to take on No. 4 Everett Alvarez in Tuesday’s semifinal at the Salinas Sports Complex.
Everett Alvarez 2, NDB 1
No. 4 Everett Alvarez (15-12) rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh to stun No. 5 Notre Dame-Belmont (14-9) in Saturday’s CCS opener in Salinas.
NDB pitcher Allison Lui locked up with Alvarez starter Dani Amendola, as the two exchanged zeroes through the first five innings. NDB broke through in the sixth, with Ava Chung scoring the Tigers’ only run. In the bottom of the seventh, Alvarez walked off on a two-run single by Amendola.
Both runs allowed by Lui were unearned. The junior right-hander allowed just four hits and a walk while striking out eight. Amendola allowed just one hit, from NDB’s Hailey Truong, while striking out 10.
DIVISION IV
Aragon 6, Mills 2
No. 4 Aragon (13-13) rallied for four runs in the fourth to knock off No. 5 Mills (14-7) in Saturday’s CCS opener in San Mateo.
The Lady Dons totaled 13 hits, including a home run by senior Rae D’Amato. Sophomore Elizabeth Magness added a double and three RBIs, while Ari Makropoulos, Caroline Harger, Destiny Garcia and Janelle Jee had two hits apiece. Makropoulos earned the win in the circle, allowing two runs (zero earned) on three hits through 3 1/3 innings. D’Amato closed it out with 3 2/3 scoreless innings.
Sophomore Audrey Jang knocked in both Mills runs in the third, giving the Lady Vikings a 2-1 lead. Aragon answered with four runs in the third to take the lead for good. Kalia Woo took the loss in the circle, working 3 1/3 innings. Hailey Pedroza allowed one run on six hits through 2 2/3 innings for relief.
Aragon advances to take on No. 8 Los Altos (11-14), after the Eagles scored a 4-3 upset at No. 1 Piedmont Hills.
DIVISION V
Burlingame 16, Latino College Prep 0
No. 1-seed Burlingame (11-12) rallied for 12 runs in the first to roll to a three-inning mercy-rule win over No. 8 Latino Prep (8-1) in Saturday’s CCS opener in Burlingame.
Senior Kasey Lyons had a perfect day at the plate and in the circle. Lyons went 2 for 2 with an RBI and two runs scored and faced the minimum through two innings of work to earn the pitching win. Junior Amalia Alfers worked a scoreless third to close it out of the Panthers.
Burlingame racked up 16 hits, paced by senior Olivia Fleming’s 3-for-3, four-RBI day. Sophomore Kendall Gorshen added three hits and two RBIs, while Madeline Koo, Hailey Miller and Keira Parker added two hits apiece.
The Panthers advance to Thursday’s semifinals to take on No. 4 Leigh-San Jose (9-14) at Capuchino at 4 p.m. Cap will host a CCS Division V doubleheader Thursday, with No. 2 St. Ignatius taking on No. 3 Homestead in the other semifinal at 7 p.m.
St. Ignatius 7, Woodside 1
No. 7 Woodside (9-15) was held to two hits by St. Ignatius junior Cassidy Chew in Saturday’s CCS opener at Fairmont Park.
Senior Cece Hammond totaled four RBIs for St. Ignatius, while teammate Delilah Berry led all hitters with a 3-for-4 day with three runs scored. Senior Kayla Wayne and junior Lacey Barstad logged the only hits for Woodside, while Barstad added two stolen bases.
Sophomore pitcher Marisa Calderon took the loss, allowing five runs (one earned) through five innings of work. Freshman Iliana Ortega allowed two runs (zero earned) on one hit in one inning of relief.
