Hedges and Halpin hit sac flies in the 6th, Guardians beat Twins for third straight victory

Hunter Gaddis pitched a scoreless 1 1/3 innings before Cade Smith closed it out in the ninth for his 29th save — tops in the majors.

Ryan Jeffers hit his ninth homer, a two-out shot off Messick in the first for a 1-0 lead.

Hedges walked leading off the third against Kendry Rojas and scored on a double by Steven Kwan to tie it. Mike Paredes (0-3) replaced Rojas and surrendered an RBI single to Brayan Rocchio to put Cleveland up 2-1.

DODGERS 2, PHILLIES 1

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Max Muncy hit a two-run homer, Justin Wrobleski pitched into the seventh inning and Los Angeles beat Zack Wheeler and Philadelphia.

The Phillies ran themselves out of a potential winning rally in the ninth after putting men on second and third with one out, with the Dodgers capitalizing to complete a 5-2-6-4 double play to end the game.

Shohei Ohtani had one of five hits for the Dodgers, who snapped a two-game skid.

Alec Bohm singled twice, doubled and drove in a run for the Phillies.

Wrobleski (11-2) struck out seven and allowed five hits in 6 1/3 innings. The 26-year-old lefty was pitching in Philadelphia for the second time in a week after striking out five in two innings during last Tuesday’s All-Star Game.

Tanner Scott got the final five outs for his 15th save after the Phillies helped him escape a jam.

RAYS 12, BLUE JAYS 2

TORONTO (AP) — Nick Fortes and Yandy Díaz each hit a three-run homer, Jonny DeLuca added two hits and three RBIs and Tampa Bay had a season-high 21 hits in a rout of slumping Toronto.

Ben Williamson and Chandler Simpson each had four hits for the AL East-leading Rays, and Junior Caminero went 2 for 3 with three walks.

Drew Rasmussen (8-5) allowed two runs and seven hits in five-plus innings as the Rays won for the seventh time in eight meetings with the Blue Jays.

Fortes went 3 for 5 with four RBIs. His homer off Lazaro Estrada in the fifth inning was his fourth of the season and second in two games.

Díaz homered off Patrick Corbin in the ninth, his 14th.

PADRES 8, BRAVES 3

ATLANTA (AP) — Manny Machado homered twice, Fernando Tatis Jr. hit the longest home run in the majors this season, and San Diego Padres beat Atlanta to even a four-game road series at 1-1.

Tatis’ two-run shot in the eighth traveled 474 feet. The previous longest of the season was a 473-foot shot by Braves catcher Drake Baldwin.

San Diego took the lead in the first when Ty France singled to center field, driving in Tatis.

Atlanta responded with a two-run second inning before the Padres regained momentum with three runs in the fourth. Jackson Merrill homered, while Tatis and Luis Rengifo each drove in a run.

Braves manager Walt Weiss opted to keep pitcher Reynaldo López (4-3, 3.50 ERA) on the mound to start the fifth. Right-hander JR Ritchie relieved López after Machado hit his second homer of the night to lead off the inning.

ROYALS 3, GIANTS 2

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Luinder Avila struck out a career-high seven and Nick Loftin hit a tiebreaking RBI single as Kansas City beat San Francisco.

Avila (5-3) allowed five hits and two runs in 6 1/3 innings. It was the longest outing in 10 career starts for the 24-year-old right-hander. Matt Strahm, John Schreiber and Alex Lange worked hitless innings of relief. Lange struck out two in the ninth inning and earned his ninth save.

Giants starter Tyler Mahle (2-9) struck out four and allowed five hits and three earned runs in five innings.

Carter Jensen opened the scoring with a solo homer in the bottom of the third. It was Jensen’s 14th homer of the season and the fifth straight game that the Royals have homered.

METS 4, BREWERS 0

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Zac Thornton earned his first career win by combining with three relievers on a four-hitter as New York blanked Milwaukee.

Jared Young and Luis Robert Jr. homered to help the Mets snap Milwaukee’s four-game winning streak. Robert’s solo shot off Bryse Wilson in the eighth was a titanic 451-foot drive to left-center for his first hit since missing nearly three months with a back injury.

Backed by terrific defense, Thornton (1-1) allowed three hits and one walk while striking out two over six innings in his fourth major league start. It was the second consecutive scoreless outing for the 24-year-old left-hander, who has thrown 18 straight shutout innings — the longest streak by a Mets rookie since Steven Matz went 19 innings in 2016.

Luke Weaver, Brooks Raley and Devin Williams each pitched one inning of relief.

CUBS 11, TIGERS 2

CHICAGO (AP) — Pete Crow-Armstrong reached five times on two hits and three walks, helping Chicago beat Framber Valdez and Detroit.

Crow-Armstrong, Seiya Suzuki and Carson Kelly each drove in two runs, and Michael Conforto connected for a two-run homer. Dansby Swanson had two hits and scored three times.

Chicago collected 11 hits while improving to 23-10 in its last 33 games, bouncing back nicely after losing 8-6 in 10 innings in the series opener on Monday night.

Dillon Dingler hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning for Detroit, which had won three of four. The All-Star catcher went deep twice on Monday night.

ASTROS 5, MARLINS 3

HOUSTON (AP) — Jeremy Peña and Isaac Paredes hit home runs, Tatsuya Imai struck out eight in six innings, and Houston beat Miami.

Imai (6-4) worked his fifth start with eight or more strikeouts and allowed one run on four hits and three walks. The 28-year-old rookie from Japan has surrendered three or fewer runs in four of his last five outings.

Peña’s first-inning homer was originally a double, but the call was overturned by the umpires after video showed the ball hit a railing in left-center.

Lucas Spence extended the lead with a second-inning RBI double, but Kyle Stowers got the Marlins within one in the fifth with an RBI double.

The rally was short-lived, as Christian Vázquez reached on an error, Yordan Alvarez ran out a third-strike wild pitch, and Paredes swung on the first pitch he saw with two outs in the fifth for a 388-foot three-run homer to left field.

Joe Mack hit a 435-foot solo homer for the Marlins in the seventh.
