Editor,
All this talk about higher sales tax is starting to bother me. I have always thought that sales taxes over 10% were too much. I think we need to look somewhere else for money. Like property taxes.
Editor,

My idea is to leave the way we do property taxes more or less the same. But give it a little bit of a tweak. For the first 50 years after a property is bought, fully appraised and the base property tax is set, leave the formula as is, don’t increase the tax by more than 2% a year. But at the point when the property hasn’t been fully appraised for 50 years or more for whatever reason, change the formula so that the property tax can now be increased by 4% a year. But allow one exception. If the owner of the property is 70 years or older and is still actually living on the property for most of the year, keep the property tax at 2% until they no longer live there.
This change keeps in place the original intent of having property owners, whether residential or business, not being forced off their property simply because of inflation. And this change does not immediately raise taxes by a huge amount for anyone. Yet because of compounding, the public sector should soon see more money available for public needs.

An intriguing idea, Ms. Hallen, but I’d say the best idea is to force government to practice fiscal management. Do we want to give anyone in California more money to waste? Remember, $50 billion was stolen in EDD fraud. $23 billion was wasted to allow criminals crossing our border to access Medi-Cal, among other “rewards” for illegally crossing our border. $24 billion was wasted on homeless programs which resulted in more homeless. $billions have been and are continuing to be wasted on the union labor giveaway known as the train-to-nowhere. $billions have been and are continuing to be wasted on the union transportation giveaway known as 100% operation of mass transit systems even though ridership is at 50% or less. We don’t need more money for public needs – we need to stop the government from burning our hard-earned money. BTW, for those who think the government should have more money, they can donate to the government or they can will their house to the government when they pass. I thank those folks, if there are any, in advance.
