Millbrae is looking to revamp a bus station at El Camino Real and Victoria Avenue, continue its popular SPIN bikeshare program and buy two new electric bikes for city staff with San Mateo County Transportation Authority grant funding, Environmental Programs Manager Andrea Pappajohn said.
The city is applying for grant funding for the three separate projects, Pappajohn told councilmembers at their meeting July 22, and will hear back on how much they’ve been awarded in November.
Millbrae will request $61,876 in funding for building out a new shelter with lighting and a bench, a real-time information system and a system map for the SamTrans bus station, Pappajohn said.
SamTrans has identified eight of 16 bus stations they run in the city as eligible for near-term investments. Of those eight stations, the Victoria Avenue and El Camino Real stop is the only one that wouldn’t require sidewalk improvement.
Mayor Anders Fung expressed concern about improving the infrastructure and sidewalks at the remaining seven bus stops, particularly given SamTrans’ own financial woes.
“It’s my understanding SamTrans is looking at their future budget, [and it’s] looking more like they might be needing assistance in the near future,” he said. “If the transportation agency gets this funding, get it when you can — it’s hard to come by given the state of their economy.”

The city can look into comprehensive repairs at bus stops throughout Millbrae at a later date, staff assured Fung.
“We’re trying to speed it up here in the city and do what we can,” Pappajohn said. “It’s a foot in the door.”
Millbrae is also seeking $250,000 in funding to continue its SPIN bicycle program — which has previously been financed by Transportation Authority grants. The joint program runs between Millbrae and Burlingame and allows riders to use SPIN bikes in the two cities for a $1 unlock fee.
Thus far, the program has generated around 25,000 rides, Pappajohn said.
The city has another request to create sustainable transportation accessibility to residents — $240,000 for the creation of an electric bike rebate program. If approved, residents enrolled in utility assistance programs would be eligible for a $500 rebate on a regular electric bike or scooter and a $1,000 rebate for a cargo electric bike.
The fourth program the city hopes to fund with grant money is the creation of an e-bike fleet for city staff use. Millbrae is requesting $10,000 for the purchase.
