A San Carlos man accused of driving dangerously into the parking lot of the Belmont Library, threatening to kill a man who gave him a disapproving look and exposing himself to bystanders Tuesday is behind bars on felony and misdemeanor charges, according to the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office.
At around 10 a.m. Tuesday, 34-year-old Brent Bickel was seen driving his pickup truck recklessly into the parking lot of the Belmont Library at 1110 Alameda de las Pulgas and pulling his car into a space at a high speed, making screeching noises with the truck’s wheels. A 69-year-old man saw Bickel drive into the lot and stared at him as he got out of his truck, according to prosecutors.
Angered by the man’s look, Bickel allegedly charged at him, yelling that he had weapons in his truck and would kill him, later screaming at others gathered at the library entrance. After a 29-year-old woman told him to stop, he allegedly tried to punch her but missed. He eventually walked back to his truck and, before he got back in, allegedly exposed himself, according to prosecutors.
To get his license plate information, the woman Bickel tried to hit followed him in her car as he drove out of the parking lot. After driving a short distance, Bicklel allegedly stopped, got out of his car and kicked her car three times, causing an estimated $1,000 in damage, according to prosecutors.
When police arrived at the scene, Bickel allegedly said he was having a bad day, according to prosecutors.
When Bickel appeared in court Thursday, he allegedly pleaded not guilty to his charges, which include felony vandalism, misdemeanor indecent exposure and misdemeanor challenging another to fight. The county’s private defender private was appointed to his case, and he will next appear in court Oct. 10 for Superior Court review conference. He remains in custody on $20,000 bail, according to prosecutors.
