San Mateo police came to the aid of a young man being beaten on the 800 block of South El Dorado Street Friday, said Lt. Mike Brunicardi, who was in charge of the crime scene.
At 4:34 p.m., a Hispanic man was walking near Ninth Avenue when an unknown number of Hispanic men in their 20s approached him and used their hands and feet to beat him to the ground, witnesses said.
Police found the man lying in a driveway with his pockets turned inside out. The Spanish speaking victim was unable to communicate with police at the scene and was taken to Stanford Medical Center. The victim sustained head injuries and his current condition is unknown, Brunicardi said.
Witnesses told police they saw the men run north on El Dorado Street and believe they jumped into a large black sedan, Brunicardi said.
Five squad cars formed a barricade around the end of the 800 block where the incident took place while officers conducted a canvass of the area. Brunicardi said the 911 call came from a neighbor who heard loud noises and saw the man pushed into her garage door.
Police are still trying to get a good description of the suspects.
"We are still piecing the story together from the neighbors," said Brunicardi, who called the violence "senseless."
Anyone with information about this crime should call the San Mateo Police Department at 522-7700.
