Foster City is investigating a cybersecurity breach, which has halted the city’s communication and information technology systems, apart from emergency responses.
The city released an announcement on Thursday stating that ransomware was found on its network early that morning, which the Foster City Police Department and other law enforcement agencies are currently investigating, city spokesperson Austin Walsh said.
According to the press release, the city is in the process of declaring a state of emergency, which will allow it to start receiving funds to maintain and support operations.
While emergency services like 911 and police dispatch have not been impacted, other communication channels have been frozen while the investigation continues. It’s not clear when the city will resume access to its network, though it’s possible that personal data was shared in the breach.
“The public’s safety is our highest priority, so we encourage members of our community to take precautions that would best assure the security of their personal information,” City Manager Stefan Chatwin in the press release. “Foster City staff, with the assistance of outside cyber security experts, are working diligently to restore the integrity of the City’s system and ensure there are no further security issues impacting services to our community.”
