Forty years later, a man who went missing in San Jose was identified as a John Doe found in Menlo Park in 1985, the San Mateo County Coroner’s Office announced Thursday.
On April 22, the Coroner’s Office matched the DNA of the partial remains found in an “undeveloped area” of Menlo Park in April 1985 with Brian Edward Jones, who was 20 when he was reported missing out of San Jose by his family in December 1984.
The investigation began on Oct. 26, 2023, when the Coroner’s Office, in partnership with Cypress Lawn Funeral Home, submitted a DNA sample to the California Department of Justice, according to a press release.
Coroner Robert Foucrault said the office maintains ongoing efforts to close cold cases and identify John and Jane Does.
“Records back then weren’t well documented so it takes a lot of work for my staff to do a lot of research and backtracking,” Foucrault said.
When DNA wasn’t collected for old cases, the Coroner’s Office works to find where the body was buried, and exhume it for DNA tests, which they did to identify Jones.
An initial male short tandem repeat partial profile was obtained by the state Department of Justice, and the profile was submitted to the Combined DNA Index System, according to the press release. Then, a potential biological relationship was identified between John Doe’s DNA and a missing person’s report taken in 2016, it said. Additional testing using a Y-Chromosome DNA partial haplotype was conducted.
“As technology gets better, we’re able to get these folks identified,” Foucrault said.
DNA comparison by the county’s Coroner’s Office identified the man, and notified legal next of kin May 20.
“I think for the families, it’s relief,” Foucrault said. “For my staff that worked on it, it’s a job well done because they’ve put closure on a case for someone’s loved one that’s been missing for a long time.”
