SOCIETY OF WESTERN ARTISTS ANNOUNCES AWARDS FOR SEPTEMBER SHOW. Society of Western Artists judges Ann Basuino, Doris Guzman and Helen Scheel made the following awards for SWA’s September show: The representational art first-place award went to Tony Pepito for his watercolor “Broadway & Main,” second place went to Arena Shawn for her watercolor “Between Earth and Sky,” and third place was awarded to Laurie Rodriguez for her oil “Ehu Girl.” The non-representational honorable mention award went to Barbara Todd for her oil “Convergence.” Other show participants are Barbara Alger, Martha Bredwell, Joe Crosetti, Diana Day Glynn, Marilyn Downes-Bennett, Anneliese Drbal, Lynne Flodin,Sheila Gordon, Pat McMorrow, Leona Moriarty, Yvonne Newhouse, Rose Nieponice, LaVey Norquist, Karen Orton, Fran Simontacchi, Sharon Slusarz Harris and Sherry Vockel. The 2018 Annual Most Popular Painting award went to Laurie Rodriguez for her oil “Innocence Broken.” The show runs through Sept. 28 at the Society of Western Artists Fine Art Center, 527 San Mateo Ave., San Bruno. THROUGH THE PHOTOGRAPHER’S LENS: PENINSULA CAMERA CLUB MEMBERS LOOK AT LIFE IN THE BAY AREA. Photographs of life in the Bay Area will be on view in the City Art Gallery of Peninsula Ballet Theater, 1880 S. Grant St. in San Mateo from Sept. 1 through Oct. 30. The exhibit will feature the work of local photographers Igor Pilawski, Jennifer O’Donnell, Marshall Dinowitz, Peggy Bechtell, William Lapworth, Steve Kessler and Steve Renwick, all members of the Peninsula Camera Club. The Caldwell Gallery presents “Recovery Happens,” an exhibition of art as part of Recovery Month, celebrating people who have reclaimed their lives through recovery from substance use and mental health conditions and honoring the greater community that makes recovery possible.
