Hillsdale mounted a late-inning comeback that came up a little short as the Burlingame defense held on for a 5-3 victory to complete the two-game sweep.
Burlingame senior Emilio Flores pitched well and made Hillsdale batters uncomfortable for much of the afternoon. Flores’ great command and ability to establish the fastball contributed to his success. Flores struck out eight and surrendered one run on four hits in his five innings of work.
“Emilio has proven to be dependable and a warrior all four of his years here. He pounds the strike zone and consistently keeps the opposition off-balance,” Burlingame manager Shawn Scott said.
Burlingame (7-1 PAL Bay, 9-2 overall) held the lead for the entire game and opened up the scoring in the top of the second. After scoring their first run off of a fielder’s choice, Panther sophomore Jacob Cilia hit a two-RBI single to left to give his team an early 3-0 lead.
Panther junior Taylor Clark expanded his team’s lead with a monstrous solo home run to right center to kick off the third.

The pitching staff for Hillsdale (2-5, 6-7-1) struggled to find the strike zone and walked a total of eight batters. It led to the Panthers having runners in scoring position nearly every inning.
The Knights responded with a run of their own when senior Will Garratt hit an RBI infield single to cut their deficit to 4-1.
In the sixth, Hillsdale began picking up some momentum by getting three consecutive hits to start off the inning. Senior Sam Freeman hit an RBI single up the middle to set the score at 4-2. Immediately afterward, junior Dylan Cesar came in the clutch and dropped a perfectly placed suicide squeeze bunt to cut the deficit to one going into the final inning.
Burlingame secured an insurance run when sophomore Keunho Kim hit an RBI sacrifice fly to left field. With the score 5-3, the Knights got the tying run to the plate, but they failed to muster up any late inning magic. Panther junior Tyler Moniz-Witten got the save and surrendered two runs on three hits and two strikeouts.
