Walking through the park this morning, I saw that the Copper Beach tree outside the Japanese Garden had had its winter whiskers trimmed back. It has been brought back to its perfect egg shape, looking like a golden Easter egg leading the parade to spring.
During the pandemic I took a degree of comfort from this annual tidying up. Could the world really be coming to an end if someone in the Parks Department still got up on a ladder and ensured our golden tree was ready for spring? This morning, in light of today’s joyfully cruel American leadership, I again took some comfort, spring has gotten its marching orders.

You were doing so well in your LTE, Ms. Jansen, until you mentioned “cruel American leadership.” That’s when I realized you were stuck in 2024. There’s no need to fret, though, the greatest President in your lifetime, twice, in the form of President Trump has taken his marching orders from voters to Make America Great Again, Again. Another three years, at least, where you can take comfort. Have a Trump-tastic day!
