Justin Moore scored 26 points to lead Cañada College to a major men’s basketball upset at 23rd-ranked Chabot Friday night, 67-60.
Cañada (1-3 Coast North, 7-11 overall) got off to a 33-29 halftime lead in Hayward and outscored the Gladiators (2-2, 1-5), 34-31, after the intermission for the victory.
The Colts also controlled the boards, 45-29, with Jake Skaggs taking down 16 rebounds, 11 off the defensive backboard.
That set’s up Wednesday’s 5 p.m. local match pitting Skyline (0-4, 8-10) at Cañada. Skyline dropped a 95-65 decision to state No. 7 Las Positas (4-0, 17-1) on Friday.
State No. 25 ranked College of San Mateo (2-2, 14-4) is tied with Chabot and De Anza for third place after losing, 80-54, at defending state champion City College of San Francisco (4-0, 17-1) Friday.
CSM’s Wilson Tran was the game’s high scorer with 19 points and was joined in double figures by Elijah Newsome (12) and Ben Liang (11)—who also had five assists. But the host Rams shot 50 per cent from the field, with 11 players scoring.
The Bulldogs host De Anza (2-2, 8-10) Wednesday at 7 p.m.
Things do not get any easier on Friday for locals in the toughest Northern California conference. Skyline ventures to CCSF and Las Positas is at CSM, both at 7 p.m. Cañada visits Ohlone (1-3, 9-9) at 6 p.m.
