Editor,
I strongly support Héctor Camacho for San Mateo County superintendent.
Why?
Héctor has seen our schools from many different vantage points — student (proud South City grad), high school teacher, counselor, school leader, county school board member, county office executive and parent. He understands the challenges confronting classroom teachers on a daily basis and he knows the leadership challenges of ensuring schools operate smoothly and safely for maximum student learning.
A county superintendent must be adept at advocacy and building coalitions to serve children and youth. Héctor is an expert at crafting such partnerships. I saw this firsthand when I served as County Superintendent. During his tenure on the County Board, Héctor developed important relationships with board members not only in San Mateo County’s school districts, but also throughout California as he worked to move educational policy forward. Héctor understands how important it is for school boards and superintendents to work together as a team, focused on crafting excellent educational outcomes for students.
I’ve known Héctor personally and professionally for many years. He has the temperament and skill set to lead when it matters most, bringing people together and focusing on students. Héctor is deeply dedicated and profoundly committed to working tirelessly to ensure all San Mateo County’s students achieve success, no matter their zip code or school district.
Héctor Camacho will be a great San Mateo County superintendent. I’m voting for Héctor. I hope you will, too.

Thanks for your letter, Ms. Campbell, but no thanks to voting for Hector Camacho. I’m not sure a DEI director is right for the job. We’ve seen what DEI has done to academic standards and civil discourse. Why would we want more? Vote for anyone but Camacho.
