According to the “2024 Old Farmer’s Almanac,” I cite: “Farmers’ Challenges,” page 6, “Farmers need workers. Labor shortages on the farm have become the biggest challenge in the industry.” The less workers available means higher wages to attract people to bring in the harvest. In turn, you can expect higher prices at the grocery store.
And more: Regarding tariffs, why is it that Trump is totally ignorant of the impact facing consumers when implementing tariffs? Foreign industrial imports will just tack on the added costs from the tariffs and send the additional costs to the consumer to be paid by them at the cash register. It has been estimated at a trillion dollars lost in disposable income for consumers over the next four years. I see it as a financial pandemic sans face masks. So, prior to Jan. 29, 2025, be proactive and get your major imported purchases out of the way and stock up the pantry.
While you are at it, do a little digging and see where that tariff money is earmarked for.
While you are at it, no penalty property taxes are due no later than Tuesday, Dec. 10.
The reality is that most of our personal expenditures in this country come from energy, fuel, food and health care. None of these are imported so the impact on our wallet is minimal. For comparison, most European countries charge up to 40% tariffs on imports. Even with 25%, Trump's plans would still not achieving a level playing field. Our trade deficit is a clear indicator of that imbalance. In case the author had conveniently forgotten. Biden kept most of Trump's prior tariffs in place.

You liberals are so annoying to listen to. I operate my own small business - the tariffs coming from China are only 10% - which IMO is fair. Because I am a savvy business owner and have made good contacts for overseas freight - I will not be raising my prices at all moving forward. And anybody who is in this country illegally needs to get out now - this is why I pay taxes - to get them out - not to keep them here.
We don't have to rely on China for cheap goods as much now because we can import from other countries that produce goods as cheaply as China. Better to spread our trade around than mostly from China that has broken international trade laws for years.
Thanks, Mr. Turturici, for repeating the Democrat playbook on alleged evils of tariffs. You seem to think imports will remain the same over time. They won’t and behaviors will be modified to account for tariffs. For instance, the US can expand their manufacturing base. The US can reduce imports from one country and increase imports from others that have reciprocal trade deals and play in a fair market. There are many objections to your tried and untrue objections regarding tariffs. BTW, if you didn’t realize it, Biden kept many of Trump’s tariffs. And it’s likely that positions Democrats endorse are likely positions the American public does not want. See recent election results for evidence.
