I am pleased to see that Caltrans has agreed to update the traffic signals at the dangerous intersection of 17th Avenue and El Camino Real. Presently vehicles are allowed to make turns through the crosswalks while pedestrians have the walk sign. This is problematic and has resulted in pedestrians getting struck. The proposed changes would restrict vehicles from turning while pedestrians are allowed to cross. Seems like a no-brainer.
Perhaps they could also incorporate Extended Pedestrian Signal Timing, using off-the-shelf technology to give pedestrians with limited mobility extra time to cross. Since El Camino is six lanes across at this location and does not have a median, slower walkers can become stranded.
These improvements cannot happen soon enough and should be considered for other dangerous intersections.
