In a recent letter, “Parking Problems,” Peggy Brady voiced similar outrage after reading my letter(s). She mentioned another developer allowing a lot less than one parking space per unit for a new 128-unit development within the state-required half mile of a major transit stop (train or bus) when the average household has 2.3 cars. Well, I guess most people are expected to take the train, bus or ride a bicycle. Do what?
To quote from the classic movie Network, “I am mad as hell, and I’m not gonna take it anymore.” But we may have to take it and get used to living with it, if we don’t persuade our state legislators (Diane Papan, Josh Becker, City Council and others) to take action. And if you are not mad now, you likely will be when a new development gets built near you and your property values (i.e. houses and multi units) plummet and you, your family and guests cannot find parking and traffic gets worse. And what about the impact on small businesses?
The state Legislature has misguidedly taken housing development out of the hands of local governments. They have thrown out the science of urban planning and made it a free for all with developers by incentivizing big profit winners. It still is possible to plan housing growth in a way that meets everyone’s needs without turning localities into wild west urban jungles. Simple solutions to complicated problems never work.
