The Trump administration announced a “reorganization” of the U.S. Forest Service, which oversees 193 million acres of national forest — an area larger than Texas. They are getting rid of its experienced staff and weakening its influence in federal decision making. The reorganization will also eliminate the regional offices and replace them with 15 state directors appointed by the Trump Administration, and shut down more than 50 research and development facilities and consolidate them into a single office.
The U.S. Forest Service manages 20 million acres of California land, from the Giant Sequoia Forest to the snow covered Tahoe mountains. In 2024, the reason the South Lake Tahoe fire didn’t spread into the homes around Lake Tahoe was because the Forest Service had previously thinned and practiced cultural burning. Without adequate staffing and knowledgeable individuals, how can we take care of our forests? Our beautiful landscape constantly struggles with devastating wildfires, and the closure of 50 USFS research facilities will place California forests and residents at a significantly higher risk.
Please call or email your local senators and representatives. Tell them what the Trump administration is doing is destroying an entire agency, not “reorganizing” it. Tell them how important the Forest Service is to the ecology, economy and safety of our communities. Tell them to deny all funding that could be used for this proposal.
National forests belong to all of us. Let’s get loud to defend the Forest Service before the Trump administration gets away with degrading and then disappearing them.
