The San Mateo County Superior Court on Friday was selected as a winner of a state award for an innovative computer program that enables people to fill out certain court forms on the Internet.
The state Judicial Council announced at a meeting in Los Angeles that the Peninsula county won one of the council's 2003 Ralph N. Kleps Awards for Improvement in Administration of the Courts. The annual awards honorinnovation in California courts.
The computer program is called the EZLegalFile Service Bureau.
It enables people to fill out legal forms in family law, small claims and housing cases. The program is interactive and asks the user simple questions in order to guide the user through the steps to complete the needed form.
Developed by San Mateo County Superior Court, the program is available to any trial court system in the state.
A total of 12 counties are currently using the program, including Napa, Marin, Contra Costa, San Mateo, Santa Clara and Santa Cruz in the greater Bay area.

San Mateo County recently won a grant from the state Administrative Office of the Courts to extend the program to trial courts from 12 more counties.
Judicial Council spokeswoman Lynn Holton said that as of June 2002, more than 15,000 Californians had completed legal forms using the program.
