san mateo duplex

A duplex in San Mateo.

The state housing department is gearing up to send stern warnings to cities trying to skirt a new housing law advocates hope will bring more affordable housing.

Senate Bill 9, a state law that went into effect Jan. 1, allows property owners to build duplexes and in some cases, fourplexes, on most single-family parcels across the state. Cities, more than 240 of which opposed the bill, have pushed back against the state with ordinances that would severely curb what property owners can build.

People want affordable housing and many want elbow room. The cost of building is high. No one is going to build, lose money, to make housing affordable. SB9 is flawed. You can't teach pigs how to sing. First of all - pigs can't sing and all you do is make them mad. Our elected legislators are not representing the people and lack logic and common sense.

Great comment, tarzantom. I would add that cities should use any and all current reasons to resist SB9. Take the state letter and frame it for motivation.

I really like that SMDJ is reprinting CalMatters articles. I recently canceled my CalMatters subscription but kept my SMDJ subscription. This is really great to have printed here!
