The San Mateo Daily Journal won 17 awards — including seven first place — at the San Francisco Peninsula Press Club’s 37th Annual Greater Bay Area Journalism Awards in Foster City Saturday night. Winners were selected from 393 entries from media professionals in the 11 Greater Bay Area counties. The Daily Journal received the highest number of awards in this year’s competition.
Its first place winners were in the news column, continuing coverage, feature story of a light nature, sports story, headline, graphic design and page design categories. The Daily Journal also won third place in the overall excellence category. The Daily Journal competes in the daily newspaper category amongst publications such as the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, the Santa Cruz Sentinel, the Palo Alto Daily News, the San Francisco Examiner and the Palo Alto Daily Post.
Reporter Angela Swartz won two first place awards; one for her ongoing coverage of the Mills High School AP test scores invalidation and the other for her feature story of a light nature on meditation in schools.
Sports Editor Nathan Mollat won first place for sports story, second place for sports game story and second place for sports columns.
Copy Editor/Page Designer Erik Oeverndiek won first place in the page design and headline categories.
Reporter and columnist Michelle Durand won first place in the news column category and third place in the headline category.

Reporter Samantha Weigel won second place in the business category for her story about the opening of salmon season and second place in the specialty category for her story on the Warfighter Brewing Company.
Former sports reporter Julio Lara swept the graphic design category and Editor in Chief Jon Mays won second place for feature columns.
Other newspapers that won awards include the Palo Alto Daily News with 14 awards, the Press Democrat with 10, the Palo Alto Daily Post with nine and the San Francisco Examiner with five.
The banquet was at the Crowne Plaza Hotel and included a keynote address by Reed Albergotti, reporter for The Wall Street Journal and co-author of the book, “Wheelmen, Lance Armstrong, The Tour de France and the Greatest Sports Conspiracy Ever.”
The Press Club also presented two scholarships and announced the naming of the high school scholarship after club founder Jack Russell, who died this year.
A total of 192 awards were presented in eight divisions and 41 categories.
