Burke and 2 relievers combine on 4-hitter, Colson Montgomery homers as White Sox beat Blue Jays 3-0

Chicago won five of six against Toronto this season, outscoring the Blue Jays 29-12.

Burke (7-4) allowed two hits in 6 2/3 innings, improving to 4-0 with a 1.41 ERA over his past six appearances. He walked one and struck out five.

Bryan Hudson got four outs and Grant Taylor finished for his fifth save in eight chances.

RED SOX 6, RAYS 1

BOSTON (AP) — Willson Contreras hit a two-run homer, Sonny Gray gave up one run and five hits over six innings, and Boston beat Tampa Bay for its 13th win in a row.

The streak is tied for the second-best in franchise history with a 13-game run in July 1948. The franchise’s longest was 15 games in June 1946.

Gray (12-1) struck out five and issued four walks in his ninth consecutive quality start. He has not allowed more than three runs since April 14.

After Victor Mesa Jr. hit an inside-the-park homer in the second inning to give the Rays a 1-0 lead, Andruw Monasterio tied it in the bottom half with an RBI double.

Boston scored three more in the third without a hit. Jahmai Jones came home on a passed ball and Wilyer Abreu scored on a fielder’s choice. Junior Caminero’s throw struck Abreu in the back as he slid into home, allowing all runners to advance safely.

METS 6, PHILLIES 1

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Nolan McLean struck out 10 and allowed just two hits in six scoreless innings, Francisco Lindor homered and drove in three runs and New York won a series in Philadelphia for the first time in nearly four years, beating the Phillies.

Juan Soto, Luis Torrens and Carson Benge also had RBIs for the Mets. Lindor reached base five times, adding a single, double and a pair of walks to his sixth homer of the season.

Alec Bohm hit his 12th homer of the season for Philadelphia.

McLean (7-6) continued his strong rookie season with the third double-digit strikeout performance of his career. He allowed only Bohm’s single in the second inning and a double by Trea Turner in the sixth. The 24-year-old right-hander lowered his ERA to 3.34.

BRAVES 8, RANGERS 5

ATLANTA (AP) — Austin Riley and Drake Baldwin each hit two home runs and Atlanta beat Texas to win the three-game series in a matchup of first-place teams.

Baldwin had a career-high five hits and became the first Braves catcher to hit two homers in a game since Johnny Estrada on May 15, 2004. Riley had three hits and drove in four runs.

The NL East-leading Braves took two of three from the AL West-leading Rangers. The Braves claimed their 21st series of the season, matching their total from 2025.

Wyatt Langford had three hits for Texas, including a homer in the ninth off Braves closer Raisel Iglesias.

PIRATES 7, GUARDIANS 1

CLEVELAND (AP) — Paul Skenes allowed one run and struck out eight in seven innings and Pittsburgh defeated Cleveland.

Skenes (9-8) went at least seven innings for the first time since May 12. The All-Star right-hander gave up seven hits.

After allowing eight runs (seven earned) in four innings in a 10-6 loss at Philadelphia on July 1, Skenes is 3-0 with a 2.46 ERA.

Billy Cook had a career-high three hits and drove in two runs, Esmerlyn Valdez continued his torrid July with a two-run homer in the ninth and Nick Gonzales had two doubles as the Pirates won their fifth straight interleague series. They have gone 11-4 in that span.

Steven Kwan had two hits for Cleveland, which had won its past three series against Pittsburgh.

ORIOLES 5, ASTROS 2

HOUSTON (AP) — Brandon Young allowed one run over seven innings, Coby Mayo homered, and Baltimore extended its season-best winning streak to seven games by beating Houston.

The streak is the Orioles’ longest since 2023.

Young (8-2) allowed five hits and one walk while striking out seven, which is one less than his season high. Yordan Alvarez’s third-inning RBI double accounted for the only run he allowed.

With Young out of the game, Rico Garcia allowed a solo home run to Jose Altuve in the eighth inning. Grant Wolfram pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his first major league save.

Gunnar Henderson gave Baltimore the lead with a third-inning RBI single. He made it 2-0 later in the frame when he stole home on a double steal.

PADRES 19, ROYALS 2

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Ty France hit a grand slam and a solo shot, Jackson Merrill also homered twice, and San Diego beat Kansas City.

Tatis Jr. homered for the second consecutive game, singled and drove in four runs.

France’s slam gave San Diego a 13-2 lead in the eighth inning.

Merrill hit a 405-foot homer, his 11th of the season, in the fourth inning and had a two-run shot in the ninth off position player Tyler Tolbert. After Randy Vásquez grounded out, France added a solo homer off Tolbert.

Kansas City’s Jac Caglianone hit his 16th homer of the season to open the scoring in the first and extend his hit streak to a career-high 10 games.

BREWERS 3, MARLINS 1

MILWAUKEE (AP) — William Contreras hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth off closer Pete Fairbanks to give Milwaukee win over Miami.

Fairbanks (3-4) was trying to protect a one-run lead, and instead ended up with his third blown save that extended Miami’s losing streak to a season-high six games.

In the last of the ninth, Jackson Chourio singled. Brice Turang walked. With one out, Contreras, who pinch hit for Jake Bauers in the seventh, connected on a 1-2 pitch for his 10th home run of the season and second career walk-off homer.

Contreras’ game-winning hit spoiled a solid start by Eury Pérez, who allowed one hit in six scoreless innings.

Esteury Ruiz homered in the third and Pérez, Cade Gibson and Michael Peterson made it stand until the ninth.

CUBS 10, TWINS 1

CHICAGO (AP) — Shota Imanaga pitched seven shutout innings and Nico Hoerner had a bases-loaded triple and four RBIs to lead Chicago to a victory over Minnesota.

Alex Bregman hit a two-run homer in the first and Imanaga (6-8) took over from there, allowing six hits with one walk before leaving after 99 pitches. The left-hander has gone a season-high seven innings four times, also shutting out the Diamondbacks in a win on May 2.

Seiya Suzuki had a one-out double off Zebby Matthews (4-7) and Bregman hit his 10th home run — a two-out shot for the lead.

Pedro Ramírez doubled and scored on Carson Kelly’s single to make it 3-0 in the second.

Bregman and Ian Happ walked after Michael Busch’s one-out single to load the bases in the third. Hoerner tripled on a ball that one-hopped past Luke Keaschall in center field before scoring on a single by Ramírez for a 7-0 advantage.

REDS 9, ROCKIES 6

DENVER (AP) — Tyler Stephenson went deep twice, Hunter Greene struck out seven over six innings and Cincinnati weathered a three-homer afternoon from Hunter Goodman to beat Colorado.

It was the third career multi-homer game for Stephenson — two of them against the Rockies. He also had a double. The Reds’ catcher is batting .357 in 23 games versus Colorado, with nine homers, 17 RBIs and nine doubles.

Goodman’s big day included two homers off Greene — a solo shot in the first and a two-run blast in the sixth — along with another two-run shot off reliever Sam Moll in the eighth to make it 9-5. He also hit three homers at Minnesota on June 27. The All-Star catcher is the first Rockies players to notch two three-homer games in the same season.

The Reds’ offense heated up quick on a sweltering afternoon (98 degrees Fahrenheit, 37 Celsius) at Coors Field. Nathaniel Lowe hit a two-out, three-run homer off Ryan Feltner (3-4) in the first and Stephenson soon followed with a two-run shot.

They made it 8-1 in the second on a three-run homer from Sal Stewart.

NATIONALS 5, ATHLETICS 2

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — CJ Abrams and Dylan Crews hit back-to-back homers in the fifth inning to send Washington to a victory over the Athletics.

Foster Griffin (11-2) allowed one run on eight hits and struck out two in seven innings. His 11th win moves him into a tie for second in the NL in the 30-year-old’s first full season as an MLB starter after three years in Japan.

The Nats improved to 12-3-1 in series play on the road and won their 11th rubber game of the year. The A’s have not won a series since taking two of three against Colorado in Las Vegas June 12-14.

Curtis Mead started the scoring with an RBI groundout in the third, but Tyler Soderstrom’s RBI single tied the game for the A’s.

Harry Ford gave Washington the lead for good with a double in the fourth that drove in Crews.

ANGELS 3, TIGERS 2

ANAHEIM Calif. (AP) — Ryan Johnson struck out five and allowed one run in five solid innings, Jorge Soler and Zach Neto delivered RBI hits and Los Angeles snapped a four-game skid with a win over Detroit.

Johnson (2-4) allowed two hits and walked three. The right-hander escaping a basesloaded, two-out jam in the fifth when he struck out Dillon Dingler with an 82-mph sweeper. Samy Natera Jr., Chase Silseth and Sam Bachman worked scoreless innings of relief.

Ryan Zeferjahn, who allowed just two earned runs in 19 1/3 innings of his previous 18 games since June 1, gave up a homer to Riley Greene in the top of the ninth as Detroit closed within 3-2. But, Zeferjhan retired the next three batters and earned his third save.

Tigers reliever Drew Anderson (3-4) issued a pair of walks that set up the Angels’ tiebreaking rally in the fifth. Nolan Schanuel, who had three hits, singled to load the bases, and Soler followed with an RBI groundout for a 2-1 lead.

The Angels pushed the lead to 3-1 in the sixth when Oswald Peraza singled, stole second, took third on Tyler Heineman’s groundout and scored on Neto’s RBI single to right.

MARINERS 6, GIANTS 3

SEATTLE (AP) — Logan Gilbert had 10 strikeouts across six strong innings, Luke Raley and Cole Young homered, and Seattle beat San Francisco.

Gilbert (8-6) allowed three runs and four hits and walked one.

The Mariners (50-50) are back to .500 for the first time in nearly two weeks and moved within a half-game of AL West-leading Texas (50-49).

Raley smacked his 15th home run of the season off Giants reliever Adrian Houser (2-7) to make it 4-3 in the sixth inning. It was Raley’s second career pinch-hit home run, and the Mariners’ second of the season.

Young added a two-run shot, his second consecutive game with a homer, that capped the scoring in the seventh.

Andrés Muñoz pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for 17th save this season.

DIAMONDBACKS 8, CARDINALS 7, 10 INNINGS

PHOENIX (AP) — Max Kepler hit a walk-off RBI double in the 10th inning and Arizona rallied from a seven-run deficit to beat St. Louis.

Kepler drove in automatic-runner Jorge Barrosa to match Arizona’s largest comeback victory in franchise history — set on August 29, 2022 in a 13-7 victory over the Phillies.

St. Louis had not blown a seven-run lead since July 6, 2010 in a 12-9 loss to the Rockies in Denver.

After Tyler Locklear singled off Gordon Graceffo with two out in the eighth, Nolan Arenado hit his 13th home run for career hit 1,999 to make it 7-7.

Juan Morillo (3-0) got the final four outs for the win.

Luis Gastelum (1-1) took the loss in his fifth big league appearance, allowing an unearned run in 1 1/3 innings.

DODGERS 8, YANKEES 2, GAME 1

NEW YORK (AP) — Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit a tiebreaking homer in the eighth inning and five Yankees pitchers combined on a four-hitter as New York edged Los Angeles 2-1 to split their day-night doubleheader.

Cody Bellinger had an early RBI single and the Yankees won for only the second time in their past 11 home games, preventing a three-game sweep by their old October rivals in the Dodgers’ first visit to the Bronx since winning the 2024 World Series.

After a rainout Saturday night, the Dodgers took the opener 8-2 as Yoshinobu Yamamoto tossed a four-hitter for his first regular-season complete game in 66 major league starts.

Hours later, it was seven pitchers from a fresh Los Angeles relief corps who quieted the Yankees’ scuffling lineup in a bullpen game for the Dodgers. New York failed to score in the fifth after loading the bases with nobody out and stranded 11 runners overall.

But the Yankees also found success with a bullpen game as Ryan Yarbrough, Paul Blackburn and Brent Headrick combined to hold the Dodgers scoreless on three hits through seven innings before pinch-hitter Tommy Edman homered on Fernando Cruz’s second pitch leading off the eighth, tying it 1-all.
