Editor,
Prop. 50: Unrestricted gerrymandering to satisfy the political wiles of ruthless politicians scurrying like rats at first light for power, money and unbounded ambition.
Yes Margaret, Texas is reported doing likewise.
One may assume “that two wrongs do not make a right” supported by Bible verses.
Nonbelievers may murmur that the “two wrongs” approach may impede further wrongs. This may provide succor for some, but ponder that Proposition 50 will be a change in our state Constitution that may span years beyond the next election; if you have faith in the “this is just temporary” Sacramento political line, then I have an exquisite timeshare for you in the Gobi Desert.
In consequence, our rural neighbors in California will have their political representation decimated for years, perhaps, decades, encumbered with representatives who have nothing in common with them.
We cannot surmise the equitable representation merely by major party registration as independent and minor party affiliations comprise approximately 29%. We may deduce from the presidential election what a fair House party representation might look like. In the California 2024 election:
Trump: 38.3%
Harris: 58.5%
With Prop. 50 passage, the California House will be:
Republicans: 8%
Democrats: 92%
But consider the current California House line-up: Republicans: 17% and Democrats: 83%, quite off-the-rails today, far worse than Texas now. Apparently, the present commission has already undertaken Newsom’s bidding, but with Proposition 50, this inequity will deepen radically and relegate Republicans to near extinction in House representation and why Texas was forced to counter. Fair?

Perhaps Californians a bit too bright to be fooled by Republicans?
