San Mateo County Sheriff Ken Binder has selected Chris Hsiung to be his temporary undersheriff effective immediately for the next eight months, the first executive team decision made by the recently appointed sheriff.
Binder had previously shared his intent to bring Hsiung on board for as long as he would be willing to serve. The reason for the brevity of his appointment was not made clear immediately.
Hsiung will serve in the temporary position “focusing on organizational healing, leadership development and operational excellence,” according to a press release.
“My focus over the next several months will be to help foster an innovative and supportive culture, invest in the people who serve here, and support Sheriff Binder in ensuring the office is positioned for long-term success,” Hsiung said in the release.
Hsiung returns to the position after serving as undersheriff from February 2023 through June 2024 under former Sheriff Christina Corpus. He left due to frustrations with the Sheriff’s Office leadership. Corpus was removed from office in October by the Board of Supervisors.
“His familiarity with the office’s staff, systems and organizational needs will allow him to provide immediate stability and support to Sheriff Binder,” according to the release.
Hsiung was previously the chief of the Mountain View Police Department, and has served the Bay Area for over 30 years.
