Editor,
San Mateo voters are being treated to a classic example of a local politician's how-to-get-ahead scenario.
This one — amid rumors that the goal is the Lantos seat in the Congress — first changes from a neighborhood association zealot to a proponent of high density/high rise development. Is there any connection here to a source of campaign funds?
Then he changed political parties, re-reregistering as a Democrat. Is there any connection here to the better odds of getting elected in this district?
Now, he's had, using his own word, an "epiphany," and suddenly changed his long standing position, to support a resolution granting equal marriage rights to same sex couples. The rumored run for the Lantos seat would require support from San Franciscans who live and vote in the Lantos Congressional District. Is this what the "epiphany" is all about?
It is fascinating, but sad, to watch politicians regularly trade principles for votes as they attempt to scale the political ladder.
