Editor,
Could Lt. Gov. Josh Fryday channel Tom Steyer?
Which of this year’s Democratic candidates for lieutenant governor would you like to see as California governor after Xavier Becerra’s term as governor ends?
Yes, before we cast this year’s votes, it’s time to think about who we could establish as our next potential Democratic Governor. This is based on the Emerson College polling results just posted.
With Tom Steyer stalling in the polls, the Emerson College Poll, announced May 12, 2026, found that a Democrat finally leads the race for governor.
That Democrat is Xavier Becerra, earning 19% support from voters and besting both the Republican front-runner Steve Hilton and Democratic billionaire Tom Steyer, Steyer is no longer gaining in the polls.
Josh Fryday is one of two leading Democrats seeking election to lieutenant governor this year. His breadth of endorsements is phenomenal. From Gavin Newsom to Pete Buttigieg, from Barbara Boxer to Betty Yee and more.
Fryday previously served as chief operating officer of the Tom Steyer-founded progressive non-profit NextGen America. The group mobilizes young voters on issues including climate, health care, reproductive freedom, immigration, and equality.
Serving in Gavin Newsom’s cabinet since 2019, Mr. Fryday oversees the nation’s largest state service force, including California’s Climate Action Corps, College Corps and Youth Service Corps.
Fryday is also a former mayor of Novato.
Which candidate for lieutenant governor might be an excellent future governor of California?
Doug Handerson

No thanks, Mr. Handerson on Mr. Fryday or any other Democrat. We’ve seen what Democrats have done to our once beautiful state. We need to move away from Democrats who have turned California into a hotbed for homelessness, high taxes, low academic achievement, incompetence, and grifting. As such, place your vote for Gloria Romero, the only candidate who would be an excellent future governor of California.
