(“Millbrae’s El Rancho set to close,” April 7). We will miss the El Rancho Inn on El Camino with its historic mission-style architecture. In its place will be less attractive but necessary pack-and-stack housing. All new housing has limited parking, a situation approved by government planners because public transit is readily available (SamTrans, BART, Caltrain).
On El Camino, right near the El Rancho housing, is another planned development; this one will have ample parking. The San Francisco PUC’s Millbrae expansion plans include a generous employee parking lot. Government employees are not expected to ride public transportation, however, SamTrans, BART and Caltrain readily serve El Camino/SFPUC property. Worse yet, to accommodate parking, SFPUC plans to eliminate retail stores like Outdoor Supply Hardware, and KFC/A&W. Thousands of Millbrae residents shop at these stores, as will future residents who occupy new housing blocks away. Fifty employees will also lose their jobs.
SFPUC needs to reconsider its El Camino development plans and work with Millbrae planners for a more equitable development.
So, Laura and Ken Smith, are you implying residents should ride public transportation while government employees are not? Seems to me that the new pack-and-stack housing should partner with SFPUC to build a high-rise parking complex so there’s parking for all. And perhaps future housing developments. Otherwise pack-and-stack residents will park in nearby neighborhoods.
