Thanks to Alyse DiNapoli and the San Mateo Daily Journal for your feature on poor air quality in South San Francisco neighborhoods adjacent to Highway 101. Sadly, these lower income, diverse communities bear the brunt of the pollution generated by cars and trucks on the highway. The result is often more childhood asthma, problem pregnancies, and heart disease among our most vulnerable populations, many of whom may have inadequate access to expensive health care.
South San Francisco is lucky to have Rise South City and Julio Garcia shining a light on this issue and speaking for those who often do not have a seat at the table when highway decisions are made that can negatively impact public health. I encourage everyone to check out their work at risesouthcity.org and support their work.
