Law enforcement agencies in San Mateo County have seized more than 3,300 illegal tobacco products and illicit drugs during a series of compliance inspections targeting smoke shops, authorities announced.
The enforcement effort focused on retailers suspected of selling prohibited products, including psilocybin-infused mushroom products, cannabis-infused items, flavored tobacco products, and tobacco products sold without permits.
While many retailers were found to be complying with state and local laws, several businesses were cited for violations, the sheriff’s office said.
Authorities also reported identifying and citing multiple merchants for selling tobacco products to minors during the current state grant funding cycle.
The operations were launched in response to community concerns about minors gaining access to restricted products.
A county ordinance banning the sale of kratom and related compounds in unincorporated areas is set to take effect June 5, authorities said.
