The city of San Mateo is one of 22 communities across the state competing in the CoolCalifornia Challenge, a city-to-city competition organized by Energy Upgrade California to help achieve California’s climate action goals

The challenge is a way for local governments, organizations and communities to come together using existing social networks to engage and motivate thousands of residents to achieve a common sustainability goal. The winning city is crowned the “Coolest California City” and two runner-ups as a “Cool California City”; and will receive a portion of the $150,000 in prize money to support their local sustainability efforts. The city plans to use the prize proceeds to launch a rain barrel rebate program to encourage further water conservation among our residents.
