A 52-year-old Redwood City man has been charged with vehicular manslaughter and felony hit-and-run for allegedly fatally striking a 72-year-old victim with his car and then fleeing from the scene on May 24, according to the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office.
The man, Francisco Gallardo Alvarez, pleaded not guilty to the charges and is currently in custody on $500,000 bail.
Alvarez allegedly struck the victim, Maria Perez Torres, with his Toyota while she was walking across Middlefield Road in Redwood City on May 24 at around 9:45 p.m., the DA’s Office said. He then allegedly looked at the victim before driving away from the scene.
Torres died from her injuries an hour later, according to the DA’s Office, and Alvarez’s truck was located through the use of Automated License Plate Reader cameras. After the truck was identified, Alvarez allegedly turned himself in four days later, the DA’s Office said.
The case was set for Superior Court review on June 17.
