An East Palo Alto man found by a jury to be guilty of felony elder abuse was sentenced Monday to three years of supervised probation and one year in county jail for slapping and punching a 70-year-old woman on two occasions near her South San Francisco home in 2017, according to the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office.
Though prosecutors asked for Steven Green, 54, to receive three years in state prison, Judge Joseph Scott noted Green’s frustration with previous perceived harassment by police officers in delivering his sentence, for which Green will receive 317 days credit for time served, according to prosecutors.
“I’m going to take a chance on you Mr. Green, please don’t disappoint,” Scott allegedly said, according to prosecutors.
On Aug. 26, Green is believed to have approached the woman and slapped her in the face while she was waiting at a bus stop, which is on the same street where he worked at a Dollar Tree store. Almost two months later on Oct. 21, the man approached her in the courtyard of her apartment building on El Camino Real and punched her in the face multiple times, causing her to fall on the ground, according to prosecutors.
Though Green’s motives in the two incidents were not clear by the time he was sentenced, prosecutors believe his girlfriend may reside in the victim’s apartment complex. When Green was first charged in November, the woman, who suffered bruising and minor injuries to her face, she said she had no idea why the beatings occurred, according to prosecutors previously.
Since 1995, Green has had seven prior felony convictions for drug sales, theft and burglary in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties. He remains in custody on $75,000 bail, according to prosecutors.
Green’s defense attorney Emily Andrews could not be immediately reached for comment.
