Days after a cybersecurity breach that was “widely impacting city services,” the city of Foster City has moved its network offline, an action that disrupted its phone and email systems outside of emergency response, according to the city.
City staff cannot make or receive calls or respond to emails but will respond when services are available. It is also investigating the cause of the breach, according to the city.
The city has already taken measures to maintain continuity of essential services with 911 working and emergency response personnel available. City Hall remains open, but with limited services available.
When the breach first occurred Thursday, March 19, the city said it was working to declare a state of emergency that will allow the city to get financial help from outside agencies to respond to the breach.
The city also previously encouraged those who have done business with Foster City to change passwords to protect their data as it is possible public information has been accessed.
“Foster City staff, with the assistance of outside cybersecurity experts, are working diligently to restore the integrity of the city’s system and ensure there are no further security issues impacting services to our community,” City Manager Stefan Chatwin said in a previous statement.
