Foster City has taken most of its computer systems offline after detecting suspicious activity on its network earlier this week, with city officials describing it as a cybersecurity breach that disrupted city services.
In a statement around 1 p.m. Friday, city officials said they activated response protocols and are working with independent cybersecurity experts to investigate and restore the city systems. Emergency services remain operational, including 911 dispatch, and first responders are continuing to serve the community. City Hall remains open, but services are limited.
The suspicious cyber activity, first reported early Thursday morning, widely affected city operations. City officials said most public services outside emergency response were temporarily paused and warned it was possible public information may have been accessed, though that has not been confirmed.
The City Manager’s Office earlier said officials have started the process of declaring a local state of emergency to help secure outside assistance in responding to the suspicious activity.
